Seating at the appropriate height is key to preventing shoulder, neck, and back pain, and other health problems; unfortunately, many office chairs don't support proper posture. When chairs are too low or high for their intended uses they can lead to neck and shoulder strain due to shoulders being elevated above desk level and wrist discomfort from being raised too high off desk surface.
To ensure that your desk is at an ideal height, begin by measuring the distance from the ground to the top of your desk (known as "work surface height"). Substitute this number into Box 1 of this diagram below to calculate an ideal seat height range.
Before sitting in a chair, be sure that both feet are on the floor with enough room between the front edge of the seat and your calves for at least 1-2" to move freely. Next, adjust the height lever until both knees bend at approximately 90-degree angles.
Seat height should be set slightly below hip level to promote good posture and reduce back pain risk, with arms at approximately the same height as forearms; any too high arms could lead to shoulder and neck strain as you tilt forward your head to see the screen, leading to poor posture; too low arms would force you to raise elbows to see it properly, straining forearm muscles in the process.
If your computer chair doesn't provide you with enough height adjustment options, consider purchasing a kit including a stool and adjustment chart to help determine your optimal seat height. Alternatively, try using a height-adjustable standing desk which has become increasingly popular across workplaces; according to one recent study those using such desks had fewer health issues than those without. It appears these desks could help limit sitting time which has been linked with many chronic illnesses.
